Sustainability

As an indus­try leader, we’re seri­ous about our goal to become a ful­ly sus­tain­able oper­a­tion. In an effort to become a cer­ti­fied sus­tain­able win­ery, we start­ed our Sus­tain­abil­i­ty Ini­tia­tive in 2017, but our com­pa­ny has prac­ticed a pol­i­cy of con­ser­va­tion since its founding.

We’re hon­ored to receive offi­cial Cer­ti­fied Cal­i­for­nia Sus­tain­able Vine­yard & Win­ery cer­ti­fi­ca­tion from the Cal­i­for­nia Sus­tain­able Wine­grow­ing Alliance, an indus­try-lead­ing pro­gram that audits sus­tain­able prac­tices and con­tin­u­ous improve­ment among California’s many vineyards.

Conservation Efforts

• In an indus­try first, Robert Hall Win­ery will ini­ti­ate a liv­ing case study for the wider wine com­mu­ni­ty to learn about regen­er­a­tive viti­cul­ture through bio­dy­nam­ic farm­ing tech­niques, com­par­ing the results with our sus­tain­ably-farmed vine­yards.
• We worked with BioFil­tro to con­struct the largest worm-pow­ered win­ery waste­water sys­tem in the world, capa­ble of fil­ter­ing more than one mil­lion gal­lons of waste­water per day. A key com­po­nent of our ongo­ing com­mit­ment to sus­tain­able prac­tices, BioFiltro’s patent­ed Bio­dy­nam­ic Aer­o­bic (BIDA®) Sys­tem enables us to har­ness the diges­tive pow­er of Cal­i­for­nia red wrig­glers to recy­cle up to 80 mil­lion gal­lons of water a year. These worms will con­vert the nutri­ents from the waste­water into worm cast­ings, a soil amend­ment sought after by grow­ers for its micro­bial activ­i­ty, nutri­ent lev­els, and abil­i­ty to improve soil health.
• Our 5,000 pan­el solar farm pro­duces approx­i­mate­ly 1.037 mil kWh annu­al­ly. Our new solar project will put a roof on our employ­ee park­ing lot and add addi­tion­al solar panels.
• We’ve intro­duced a grow­er cer­ti­fi­ca­tion pro­gram that cer­ti­fies grow­ers who fol­low sus­tain­abil­i­ty prin­ci­ples. A large num­ber of our grow­ers are already cer­ti­fied, with our goal to pur­chase 100% of our grapes from cer­ti­fied grow­ers by 2022.
